Materials maker AdvanSix Inc. has launched 100 percent post-industrial recycled grades of its Aegis-brand nylon 6 resins and Capran-brand biaxially oriented nylon films.
In a news release, officials with AdvanSix in Parsippany, N.J., said that the new products offer customers a way to address sustainability goals by using materials built on recycled monomers reclaimed from waste streams into their end products without compromises on performance.
"We are all on a journey to a more sustainable future," Sarah Waller, nylon solutions vice president, said. "Our customers — and their customers — are increasingly focused on achieving their sustainability goals."
Waller added that AdvanSix "is pleased to partner with our customers and support their journeys by offering an innovative PIR solution that customers can trust to incorporate recycled material content into their manufacturing processes and products, minimizing environmental impact."
Company officials said the firm's 100 percent PIR grades have the same processability as their AdvanSix standard-grade counterparts and are food-contact-compliant, making them ideal in applications with rigorous performance requirements or that are challenging to recycle.
Such applications include food and medical packaging requiring FDA approval, bag-in-box beverage packaging and other food-contact-compliant applications. The new materials also can be used with light-colored carpets and other products with specifications for color or odor contamination. Officials added that using PIR solutions from AdvanSix in manufacturing process doesn't require customers to requalify the new grades.
After nylon polymerization, AdvanSix recovers unreacted caprolactam feedstock from waste streams and recycles it back into the manufacturing process. Using an industry-accepted mass balance method, the recycled material is allocated into the new recycled resins and films.
Earlier this year, AdvanSix was awarded a Platinum rating for corporate social responsibility from EcoVadis, which tracks more than 200 purchasing categories in 190 countries.
In the first half of 2021, AdvanSix posted sales of $814.1 million, up 52 percent vs. the same period in 2020. The firm's first-half profit of $72.3 million was more than three times higher than 2020 in the same comparison. In the second quarter, nylon and caprolactam accounted for almost 40 percent of AdvanSix's sales.
On Wall Street, AdvanSix's per-share stock price began 2021 near $20 but was around $38 in late trading Sept. 23 for an increase of 90 percent.
